Leisa and Zac’s Prince Albert Engagement Photos
Leisa and Zac own a horse boarding facility near Prince Albert. On Leisa’s birthday, she and Zac walked up to the indoor riding arena behind their house. Zac said her present was inside, so she thought she was getting either a new saddle or arena timers. Inside was a table with a wrapped bouquet of flowers on it. No saddle or arena timers anywhere. She opened the bouquet to find roses. Thinking there must at least be a gift card in there somewhere, she gave them a shake.
Nothing.
Feeling mildly ripped off, she turned around to find Zac – and there he was, on one knee with a box. Shaking and emotional, the only words he could get out were “I love you.” Leisa definitely hadn’t seen that coming, but it was pretty perfect.
I first met Leisa wayyyy back in 2013, when I photographed her brother Kyle and sister-in-law Amanda’s farm wedding. Theirs was the first wedding I ever did that was entirely at home, with a backyard ceremony and a tent reception and people camping over in the yard in RVs. It immediately solidified my love for these deeply personal weddings, meaningful not only for who you’re with, but where you are.
Leisa and Zac love the outoors and spending time enjoying their farm with their dogs and horses. Hosting BBQs and parties for family and friends is one of their favourite things to do, so planning for a wedding at home was the obvious choice. Fall is a particularly beautiful time on their farm, with it’s colorful trees and rolling hills, and made the perfect setting for their engagement session as well. These two have such a beautiful connection, not only with each other but with the place they call home. After some comedic attempts at a family photo with three wiggly energetic dogs, we spent a sunny evening out in the pasture with the horses.
Which leads me to a bit of a confession.
If I’ve taken a photo of you with your horse, I was absolutely terrified (maybe you could tell and were just being polite). I wanted to be excited because you’re obviously an outdoorsy animal lover and therefore the best kind of person, but I was basically crapping myself. Don’t get me wrong, I think horses are gorgeous creatures… that I prefer to admire from a very safe distance, preferably with a fence in between. I have no actual idea why – it’s just always been a weird fear of mine. So when Leisa and Zac told me they have a lot of horses that they wanted in the photos, I put on a brave face, but inside I was like “well I guess this is how it ends…?” I shot a good portion of their engagement session with a horse nose in my ear. They were curious, sweet, and gentle. They gave me no choice but to love them, and I can’t wait for them to join us for some wedding photos.
Leisa and Zac’s farm wedding this June, with a ceremony in their beautiful yard and reception in the riding arena, is going to be a fun and relaxed day at home with the people they love – the ultimate backyard party!

Your photographs are beautiful and fully capture the love and emotions shared between Leisa and Zac! I love the way you incorporated the location and lighting into the photographs – Leisa and Zac are definitely the subject with the location, lighting and composition all contributing towards making them so. I was wondering if this photo shoot was done with natural light, or a combination of natural light and light modifiers e.g, (reflectors, on/off camera flash, etc). Any details regarding the lighting would be greatly appreciated by me. Thank you!
